Diamondbacks selected Stanford SS Tommy Troy with the 12th pick of the 2023 MLB Draft.

Troy packs some serious punch, despite his smaller 5-foot-10 frame. He wrapped up his junior season at Stanford with a sparkling .394/.478/.699 triple-slash line with 27 homers and 17 stolen bases in 58 games. He played mostly third base in his final year at Stanford, but his ideal position is most likely second base due to his arm strength. He is an above-average hitter that does not strike out often, but there are still questions about how much thump he will produce against more advanced hitters. He has a chance to move extremely quickly through Arizona’s system and could join their electrifying young nucleus at the highest level next year.
Alek Thomas

Alek Thomas clubbed his fifth home run of the season on Sunday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough to lead the Diamondbacks to victory over the visiting Pirates.

Thomas tagged Ryan Borucki for his game-tying 378-foot solo shot in the third inning that pulled the Diamondbacks even at 2-2. He also singled in the ballgame, finishing the afternoon 2-for-3. He concludes the first half of the season hitting .240/.280/.409 with five homers, 16 RBI and five stolen bases in 58 games.
Zach Davies

ARI Starting Pitcher #27

Zach Davies pitched decently in Sunday afternoon’s loss to the Pirates, surrendering three runs on four hits over his 5 1/3 innings of work.

The 30-year-old hurler struck out six batters on the afternoon while issuing two free passes. The big blow against him came on a two-run blast off the bat of Ji-Man Choi in the second inning. The Pirates scratched out an additional run against him in the fifth. Davies generated seven swings and misses on 92 pitches in the ballgame, registering a CSW of 23 percent. He concludes his first half of the season with an underwhelming 1-5 record, 6.37 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and a 45/24 K/BB ratio over 53 2/3 innings in 11 starts.
Gabriel Moreno

Gabriel Moreno is not in the Diamondbacks’ starting lineup for Sunday’s finale against the Pirates.

After starting the last three games behind the dish, Moreno will start Sunday’s game on the bench. The 23-year-old has struggled with power in his first season in Arizona, hitting .267/.312/.343 with two homers across 231 plate appearances. Carson Kelly will catch Zach Davies and bat eighth in his absence.

Diamondbacks placed LHP Tyler Gilbert on the paternity leave list.

Tyler Gilbert will miss the final game before the All-Star break. The lefty allowed one earned run over three innings of work on Saturday. He will likely return to the Diamondbacks bullpen on Friday.

Diamondbacks recalled RHP Carlos Vargas from Triple-A Reno.

Vargas made the Diamondbacks roster out of Spring Training but was optioned to Triple-A in early April after posting a 5.79 ERA across five appearances. He wasn’t much better in Triple-A; in fact, he was worse, but he returns to Arizona’s bullpen with Tyler Gilbert heading to the paternity list on Sunday.
Drey Jameson

ARI Starting Pitcher #99

Drey Jameson (elbow) is getting a second opinion on his UCL injury this week.

Jameson was quickly transferred to the 60-day IL after imaging revealed the injury to the UCL in his right elbow. The injury comes at a tough time for the Diamondbacks as they hold a half-game lead over the surging Dodgers for the top spot in the NL West. If the injury is serious and Jameson has to have Tommy John surgery, he will likely miss all of the 2024 season. The team should announce more after the All-Star break.
Alek Thomas

Alek Thomas had a game-tying homer in the eighth and a game-tying single in the 10th as the Diamondbacks came from behind to edge the Pirates 3-2 on Saturday.

The single was just a 67-mph grounder, but it was going to tie the game regardless and it turned into a single because no one covered first after Carlos Santana came way off the bag to field it. Corbin Carroll later won the game with another single. Before that, Thomas gave the Diamondbacks a chance to prevail with his fourth homer off Colin Holderman in the eighth. It was a big win for Arizona, which was throwing a bullpen game against an All-Star in Mitch Keller. The team had just one hit off Keller before Thomas’s homer.
Scott McGough

After six losses, Scott McGough finally moved into the win column after allowing an unearned run over two innings Saturday against the Pirates.

McGough pitched a scoreless ninth in a tie game and then allowed only the automatic runner to score in the 10th. The Diamondbacks picked him up afterwards, scoring twice in the bottom of the inning. If the D-backs hadn’t scored, it would have been the third time this season that McGough, the current favorite for saves in the Arizona pen, had lost after allowing only the automatic runner to score in extras.
Jake McCarthy

ARI Center Fielder #31

Jake McCarthy is absent from the Diamondbacks’ starting lineup for Saturday’s matchup against the Pirates.

It looks to be a routine day of rest for the speedy 25-year-old outfielder. Alek Thomas will cover center field in his absence on Saturday and will bat ninth against Mitch Keller and the Pirates.
