White Sox selected Mississippi SS Jacob Gonzalez with the 15th pick of the 2023 MLB Draft.

While he spent the last three years as one of college baseball’s best players, the issue with Gonzalez is how he progressed. His best season was as a 19-year-old freshman, as he posted OPS’s of 1.005, .963 and .999 in his three seasons at Mississippi. There’s also concerns whether he offers enough range to be a plus defender at shortstop, although he’s reliable, and would almost certainly be a quality second baseman if the White Sox want to go in that direction. His left-handed bat is solid enough that he’s one of the safest bets in the draft to turn into a contributor in the majors. It’s just the upside that’s in question.

A corresponding move will be announced after the All-Star break — likely someone returning from the injured list. The 26-year-old hurler has posted a 5.79 ERA, 2.14 WHIP and a 6/1 K/BB ratio over 4 2/3 innings with the big league club this season.

Kendall Graveman allowed one run on Sunday in a blown save against the Cardinals.

Graveman was called upon to guard a one-run lead in the top of the ninth inning, and wound up loading the bases with only out before giving up a game-tying fielder’s choice to Alec Burleson. He proceeded to hit ensuing batter Jordan Walker with a pitch to re-load the bases before striking out Nolan Gorman to keep it a tie ballgame. It was his third blow save in 10 chances this season.

Lucas Giolito yielded two runs over seven innings on Sunday in a no-decision against the Cardinals.

Giolito gave up only two hits, including a fourth-inning homer to Willson Contreras, which accounted for all of the damage against him. He finished with five strikeouts and also issued three walks. The 28-year-old impending free agent, who figures to be at the epicenter of trade rumors over the next few weeks, will carry a serviceable 3.45 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 117/34 K/BB ratio across 112 1/3 innings (19 starts) into the All-Star break.

Andrew Benintendi (wrist) has missed the last two games due to a wrist issue.

White Sox manager Pedro Grifol told reporters that the outfielder has been experiencing pain in his wrist for most of the year, and the team wanted to give him more time to heal prior to the All-Star break. It appears he will avoid a stint on the injured list and will be ready to go when the second half of the season begins on Friday.

Andrew Benintendi is not in the White Sox’ lineup for Sunday’s contest against the Cardinals.

Benintendi will miss his second game in a row on Sunday. The team has not announced if the 29-year-old is under the weather or dealing with an injury. The outfielder is hitting .280/.347/.369 but has just one homer on the year. Zach Remillard will patrol left field and bat leadoff in his absence.

Touki Toussaint allowed two runs over five innings on Saturday in a loss to the Cardinals.

Toussaint pitched well in a spot start for the White Sox, but was still saddled with a loss, as a Paul DeJong RBI single and Brendan Donovan RBI ground out were the difference in a low-scoring affair. He finished with five strikeouts and only issued one walk. There isn’t a clear path to a starting rotation spot at the moment, but that could change in a few weeks if Chicago decides to tear it down at the trade deadline.

The right-hander has appeared in three games (one start) since joining the White Sox — posting a 3.60 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and an 11/8 K/BB ratio across his 10 innings of work. He shouldn’t be expected to work more than four or five innings on Saturday and isn’t a recommended streaming option.

Jake Burger homered, doubled, walked twice and drove in three runs to lead the White Sox past the Cardinals 8-7 on Friday.

Burger has opened July 5-for-19 with two homers and four walks, and while that’s not spectacular, it’s a big improvement over his .146 average and .200 OBP last month. He might be buried now if Yoán Moncada were healthy, but as is, there’s still more time for him to make himself indispensable.
