The Detroit Red Wings have extended their affiliation with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins through 2026-27.
“Grand Rapids continues to be a model franchise both on and off the ice and we’re excited to continue our partnership,” Wings GM Steve Yzerman said. “The winning culture established by the Griffins is extremely beneficial for the development of our young players and the fans in Grand Rapids do a tremendous job creating an exciting atmosphere to support the growth of our players.” The Red Wings have been affiliated with the Griffins since 2002 and the close proximity of the two franchises has made it a good fit for Detroit. The Griffins have also seen a good amount of success lately, winning the Calder Cup in 2013 and 2017.

  • DET Head Coach
Jay Varady has been hired by the Detroit Red Wings as an assistant coach.
Varady spent the previous three seasons as the head coach of the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners. He’s well traveled, having also served on the coaching staff of the WHL’s Everett Silvertips, and worked as the head coach of the Angers in France, the USHL’s Sioux City Musketeers, and the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs. This will be the first time he’s been on an NHL coaching staff. Varady is set to work under head coach Derek Lalonde.

Jake Walman has decided to file for salary arbitration.
Walman, who will miss the start of the 2022-23 season following offseason shoulder surgery, posted 10 points, 87 shots, 58 blocks and 47 hits in 51 games with St. Louis and Detroit last season. He is coming off a two-year, $1.45 million deal.

  • DET Center #18
Detroit GM Steve Yzerman is excited by the Red Wings signing of Andrew Copp to a five-year deal.
Copp had a great season with both Winnipeg and the New York Rangers with 21 goals and 53 points but that is not all he can do. “He’s 28, he’s a very good athlete, he’s very versatile, he’s playing center, he’s playing wing, he can play on the power play, he plays on the penalty kill, he’s a good face-off man,” Yzerman said. “At 28, I’m comfortable offering a player a five-year contract because he’s a good athlete. We know he takes care of himself, he’s very professional.” He was especially outstanding with the Rangers after the deadline day trade as he had eight goals and 18 points in just 16 contests. He returns home to Michigan where he played at the University of Michigan with Red Wings star Dylan Larkin.

Fabbri sat out the final 24 games of the 2021-22 campaign after he had ACL surgery. It doesn’t come as a surprise that he won’t ready for the start of next season. Fabbri had 17 goals and 30 points in 56 matches.
