Astros selected Nebraska SS Brice Matthews with the 28th pick of the 2023 MLB Draft.

It’s a fascinating pick for new Astros general manager Dana Brown, who was one of the architects of the Braves’ incredible young core. Matthews is the classic high-floor collegiate middle infielder that has a chance to make it to the majors, if he can solve some of the contact issues in his profile. The 21-year-old middle infielder will bolster Houston’s middle infield depth moving forward.

Brandon Bielak yielded three runs — two earned — in five innings Sunday in a loss to the Mariners.

A Jeremy Peña error and a HBP opened the door for the Mariners to score three times on two hits in the fourth. Bielak did fine otherwise, so he’ll likely keep his rotation spot initially after the break. He’s 4-5 with a 3.79 ERA.

Alex Bregman went hitless in four at-bats in the loss to the Mariners on Sunday.

Bregman had a nice June, but his last 10 games have seen him go 5-for-35 with one extra-base hits. He finishes the first half with a disappointing .240/.338/.387 line, though because he’s done all of his best work with runners on, he’s been quite a bit more valuable to the Astros than the OPS suggests.

Astros’ manager Dusty Baker told reporters on Sunday that left-hander Framber Valdez will not pitch during Tuesday’s All-Star game.

It’s the second straight season that the 29-year-old southpaw has made the All-Star team, and Valdez did work a scoreless inning in last year’s contest. Valdez just threw six innings against the Mariners on Saturday — and had been dealing with an ankle issue prior to that start — so it’s understandable why he’d be unavailable on Tuesday.

Jose Altuve (oblique) took grounders prior to the Astros’ game on Sunday.

Altuve was placed on the injured list on July 6 with a mild left oblique strain and is expected to return to the Astros’ lineup shortly after the All-Star break. The 33-year-old veteran is hitting .264/.371/.479 with six homers and five stolen bases across 143 plate appearances this season.

Martín Maldonado swatted a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning on Saturday, powering the Astros to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Mariners.

The 36-year-old backstop tagged hard-throwing right-hander Andres Munoz for his 371-foot (94.9 mph EV) solo shot in the eighth inning to put the Astros on top for good. That would be his only hit in three at-bats on the night. For the season, he’s now hitting a miserable .169/.251/.289 with six homers and 14 RBI.

Kyle Tucker went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and picked up his 15th stolen base of the season in Saturday’s victory over the Mariners.

The dynamic 26-year-old outfielder opened the scoring in the ballgame with an RBI double off of Mariners’ right-hander Bryan Woo in the bottom of the first inning. He then dashed around to score on an infield single off the bat of Alex Bregman. The All-Star outfielder is having another terrific season for the Astros — hitting .291/.366/.475 with 13 homers, 56 RBI and 15 swipes on the season.

Ryan Pressly slammed the door on the Mariners in the ninth inning on Saturday, working a scoreless frame to protect a one-run advantage and earn his 20th save of the season.

Pressly came on after Martin Maldonado slugged a go-ahead homer in the bottom of the eighth inning and he made sure that one-run lead stood up. The 34-year-old hurler did issue a two-out walk to Julio Rodriguez, but rebounded to get Ty France to fly out to right field to end it. On the season, he now sports a terrific 2.52 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and a 42/8 K/BB ratio across 39 1/3 innings of work.
Framber Valdez

HOU Starting Pitcher #59

Framber Valdez logged a quality start in a no-decision against the Mariners on Saturday, surrendering just two runs on five hits over his six frames.

The 29-year-old southpaw struck out six on the evening while issuing a pair of walks. He allowed run-scoring singles to J.P. Crawford in the third inning and Jose Caballero in the fourth, but was able to limit the Mariners’ offense otherwise. Valdez generated 12 swings and misses on 105 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 23 percent. He concludes the first half of the season with a 7-6 record, 2.51 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a 116/26 K/BB ratio over 111 innings in his 17 starts.

Yordan Alvarez (oblique) took batting practice with the Astros once again at Minute Maid Park on Saturday.

He’s scheduled to face fellow rehabbing teammate Jose Urquidy in a live batting practice session on Sunday. He’s expected to start a minor league rehab assignment after the All-Star break and should be ready to join the Astros shortly after.
