Royals selected Sinton HS (TX) C Blake Mitchell with the eighth pick of the 2023 MLB Draft.

Virginia backstop Kyle Teel was considered the top catching prospect in this year’s draft class, but the Royals have decided to go with the younger Mitchell, the top-ranked prep catcher instead. The 19-year-old backstop possesses promising raw power potential, although there’s some strikeout risk in his profile. The track record for prep catchers in the first round isn’t a particularly fruitful one, but Mitchell has a legitimate chance to stick behind the plate and also offers some experience on the mound as a fallback plan. He could be the future behind the plate in Kansas City once the Salvador Perez era is over.

Michael Massey went 3-for-4 and tripled in two runs to help the Royals beat the Guardians 4-1 on Sunday.

Massey had been 1-for-12 in four games since coming off the injured list. The triple down the right field line came on a Shane Bieber pitch that was about a foot below the strike zone. It was his first in 65 games this season and second of his career.

Barlow has been very good since the first three weeks of the season, but he just isn’t getting many save chances for a bad Kansas City team. Things might pick up if he’s traded, but it’s also quite possible that he’ll be a setup man elsewhere.

Pratto has started ten games in a row for the Royals but will start Sunday’s game on the bench. The 24-year-old is having a better season but is only hitting .246/.331/.388 across 257 plate appearances. Matt Duffy will start at first base and bat eighth in his absence.

Samad Taylor was recalled in a corresponding transaction.

Throwing five innings, Brady Singer gave up six runs and 13 hits to the Guardians on Saturday to take his eighth loss of the year.

Seriously, Brady? Singer is just the fourth pitcher this year to give up 13 hits, and he’s the first pitcher to give up 13 hits to the Guardians since, you guessed it, Austin Bibens-Dirkx on July 21, 2018. The 22 balls in play against him averaged 97 mph, which is pretty amazing, considering that the Royals don’t seem to care whether or not their batters hit the ball hard. It’s just another massive failure for an organization that should be forced the rename itself the Massive Failure Royals.
