DaQuan Jeffries shot 7-of-14 from the field and 5-of-5 from the foul line in Saturday’s 110-101 loss to the 76ers, recording a line of 20 points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and one 3-pointer in 21 minutes.

With the Knicks trading Obi Toppin to the Pacers and not making a significant move in free agency, a few Summer League players may be competing for the right to back up Julius Randle next season. Jeffries had the best performance on Saturday, while Isaiah Roby (7/5/2/1) played 26 minutes and shot 3-of-8 from the field. The Knicks could still make a move between now and the start of training camp (Christian Wood is still a free agent, for example), so it isn’t a lock that Jeffries or Roby will slide into the backup role. But they’ll still look to do all they can to earn themselves the opportunity to win the job in training camp.

According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, the Knicks have signed Jacob Toppin to an Exhibit 10 contract.

Even with the Knicks trading Obi Toppin to the Pacers, a member of the Toppin family will be present when training camp begins in September. Jacob, who was undrafted after four years at Kentucky, has been signed to an Exhibit 10 deal that guarantees him a spot in training camp and $75,000. It was initially believed that he had been signed to a two-way contract. This transaction won’t impact fantasy basketball.
Donte DiVincenzo

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Knicks have signed Donte DiVincenzo to a four-year deal worth $50 million.

DiVincenzo’s one season with the Warriors proved fruitful, with the former first-round pick earning a multi-year deal worth the mid-level exception. In 72 games (36 starts) last season, he averaged 9.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.3 steals, and 2.1 3-pointers in 26.3 minutes. DiVincenzo shot better than 39% from three, and his addition gives the Knicks a welcome boost in that department. This signing also means a reunion, as he’ll join fellow Villanova alums Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart in the Big Apple.
Obi Toppin

IND Power Forward #1

Obi Toppin has been traded to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for two second-round picks.

There had been reports that Toppin was frustrated in New York, and now he’ll get a fresh start with the Pacers. He wasn’t able to find much of a role with the Knicks, but that shouldn’t be an issue in Indiana since Jarace Walker is the only other power forward on the roster. This is an excellent low-risk, high-reward move for the Pacers, and it certainly helps Toppin’s chances of being relevant in fantasy basketball. In exchange for Toppin, the Knicks will receive second-round picks in 2028 (least favorable of Indiana and Phoenix’s pick) and 2029 (least favorable of Indiana and Washington’s pick).

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Josh Hart has picked up the player option on his contract for the 2023-24 season.

Hart will make $12.9 million next season, but this move is likely the precursor to him and the Knicks agreeing to an extension. While such a move would not impact Hart’s money for next season, doing this would help New York preserve some cap space. The Knicks can offer Hart a maximum extension worth $81 million over four seasons, beginning with the 2024-25 season. Hart has been clear about his desire to remain in New York, and keeping him has been viewed as a priority of the front office.
Donte DiVincenzo

Donte DiVincenzo has declined his $4.7 million player option with the Warriors and will enter unrestricted free agency, per ESPN’s Kendra Andrews.

Unsurprisingly, DiVincenzo declined the second year of the “prove it” deal that he signed with the Warriors last summer. While they could certainly resign him to a deal that is a better representation of his value, there’s also a real chance that he walks. There have been rumors of DiVincenzo having interest in joining his former teammates at Villanova in New York, with Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart both joining the Knicks last season. The Warriors seemed to have already prepared for his departure by drafting Brandin Podziemski, who can provide a lot of what DiVincenzo brought to the table last season.

NYK Shooting Guard #3

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Josh Hart and the Knicks have agreed to extend his Sunday deadline to Thursday for his $12.9 million player option.

According to Woj, Hart could still opt in or he could opt out and sign a new deal with New York. The Knicks want to make re-signing Hart a priority this off-season after a productive end-of-season run with New York.
Derrick Rose

MEM Point Guard #4

The Knicks will not pick up the option on Derrick Rose’s contract, making him an unrestricted free agent on June 30.

Long a favorite of Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau, Rose spent the majority of last season out of the rotation. And with Jalen Brunson, Immanuel Quickley, and Miles McBride all under contract for 2023-23, that situation wasn’t going to change. Rose, who has been lauded for his professionalism and leadership despite falling out of the rotation, will have the opportunity to join another team when free agency begins. According to Newsday’s Steve Popper, the door has not been closed on a return to New York, either. Should that happen, Rose would likely be paid the veteran minimum.
Josh Hart

NYK Shooting Guard #3

Josh Hart stated in a recent interview that he will “probably” opt out of the final season of his current deal to become an unrestricted free agent.

Hart’s comment comes as no surprise; if anything, using the word “probably” was a bit conservative on his part. He was a key cog for the Knicks in their run to the second round of the playoffs after being acquired at the trade deadline, likely earning himself more money in the process. Hart also said that he hopes to remain with the Knicks, and getting a deal done would be a positive for both sides given his impact. Hart would have made a little under $13 million had he picked up his player option for next season; he stands to command more in free agency.
Julius Randle

NYK Power Forward #30

The Knicks announced that Julius Randle underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure on his left ankle on Friday.

Randle, who initially injured his left ankle late in the regular season, was hampered by the issue throughout the team’s playoff run. The two-time All-Star reinjured his ankle during Game 5 of the Knicks’ first-round series against the Cavaliers and did not look like himself at all during the second round. According to the team, Randle is expected to resume basketball activities at some point this summer. He finished this season as a top 75 player in 9-cat formats, rebounding after a disappointing 2021-22 campaign. Having a full season with Jalen Brunson under his belt should help Randle maintain that status, if not exceed it, in 2023-24.
