Xander Bogaerts received a cortisone injection in his injured wrist on Sunday.

The hope for the Padres is that he’ll rest and not do any swinging at all over the break, with the expectation that the injection will reduce the inflammation that he has been dealing with in his injured wrist. Bogaerts is expected to be ready for the start of the second half on Friday.

Padres selected Homewood-Flossmoor HS, (Flossmoor, IL) OF Dillon Head with the 25th pick of the 2023 MLB Draft.

The Clemson commit is a superb athlete who can handle center field and will be a speedster from the jump, with many different scouts dropping 80-grade speed on him. Can he hit? The lack of consensus on that is the reason he wasn’t a top-10 caliber pick on most boards. If he can harness everything and put together a 50-55 grade bat, Head has a chance to contribute in all five categories in fantasy. Just don’t count on it happening any time soon, as he’s likely to need a bit of extra seasoning.

Manny Machado powered the Padres past the Mets on Sunday afternoon, crushing a pair of home runs and driving in five in a 6-2 victory.

Machado opened the scoring in the ballgame in the home half of the first with a 385-foot (105.9 mph EV) three-run blast off of Mets’ right-hander Max Scherzer. Machado victimized Scherzer again in the fifth inning — that time a 337-foot (100.5 mph EV) two-run shot that increased the Padres’ lead to 5-0. He finished the day 2-for-4 and heads into the All-Star break hitting .261/.307/.458 with 15 homers and 49 RBI.

Fernando Tatis Jr. went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs as the Padres triumphed over the Mets in their first-half finale on Sunday afternoon.

The 24-year-old superstar smacked a one-out double off of Max Scherzer in the opening inning, then rode home on Manny Machado’s three-run blast. He then singled with one out in the fifth inning and again rode home on Machado’s long ball — that time a two-run blast. With his two-hit afternoon, Tatis Jr. finishes the first half slashing .288/.346/.525 with 16 homers, 44 RBI and 14 stolen bases.
Joe Musgrove

SD Starting Pitcher #44

Joe Musgrove delivered a dominant performance in Sunday’s victory over the Mets, racking up seven strikeouts over six shutout innings.

The right-hander allowed just three hits on the night and didn’t walk a batter. The only real threat against him came in the fourth inning, as the Mets loaded the bases with a single and two hit-batsmen, but Musgrove fanned D.J. Stewart and Francisco Alvarez to quell the threat. He got 13 whiffs on 88 pitches on the night, posting an elite CSW of 39 percent. He finishes the first half with an 8-2 record, 3.29 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 79 1/3 innings.

Ha-Seong Kim is batting leadoff and playing second base in Sunday’s finale against the Mets.

Kim missed Saturday’s game after he kicked a water cooler in frustration, which injured his toe. The 27-year-old has been stealing bases at an incredible clip as of late and has three thefts in the month of July.
Matthew Batten

SD 2nd Baseman #17

Matthew Batten crushed a two-run homer off of David Peterson in the second inning on Saturday, powering the Padres to a 3-1 victory over the Mets.

The 28-year-old infielder tagged the Mets’ southpaw for his 377-foot two-run blast in the second inning — extending the Padres’ early lead to 3-0. It was the first home run of Batten’s big league career. He’s unlikely to garner much playing time in a bench role with the Padres and can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes.
Josh Hader

SD Relief Pitcher #71

Josh Hader closed out the Mets on Saturday night, working a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a two-run advantage.

The 29-year-old southpaw did make things interesting by allowing a leadoff single to Francisco Lindor, but he followed that with strikeouts of Pete Alonso and Francisco Alvarez before getting Jeff McNeil to ground out to second to end it. On the season, Hader now boasts a minuscule 1.10 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 49/19 K/BB ratio over 32 2/3 innings while recording 21 saves in 24 attempts.
Blake Snell

SD Starting Pitcher #4

Blake Snell was dominant in Saturday’s victory over the Mets, allowing just one hit and three walks over six shutout innings.

Snell missed plenty of bats in this one, piling up 11 strikeouts over his six frames. The 30-year-old southpaw generated 17 swings and misses on 105 pitches in the game — seven on his changeup — while posting an elite CSW of 36 percent. The only hit that he allowed came on a two-out infield single off the bat of Brandon Nimmo in the third inning. Snell heads into the All-Star break with a 6-7 record to go with a stellar 2.85 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and a 132/49 K/BB ratio across 98 innings in his 18 starts.
Manny Machado

SD 3rd Baseman #13

Manny Machado went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBI on Friday in the Padres’ extra-inning loss to the Mets.

Machado did everything in his power to attempt to lead San Diego to a much-needed victory, but it wasn’t enough. The 31-year-old third baseman put the Padres on the board with an RBI double in the opening frame and also added a two-run homer off Mets closer Daniel Robertson in the bottom of the 10th inning. It was his 13th round-tripper of the season.
